Keeping On Top of the Game

A shortish entry today–bad enough that it’s a day late. Things get busy sometimes, ya know? And things are going to only get busier. When it comes to things like time management, I can be a little inconsistent. Sometimes I’m a goddamn savant when it comes to timing.

To watch me cook a holiday dinner, or organize and time a large cookout, or pack and load-up/loud-out for a book or art event are all things of beauty to behold.

I may get so deep into a project that I neglect to take the clothes out of the laundry when it needs to be, or so committed to a well-earned nap that I didn’t leave time to get to the grocery store in time. That kind of thing.

When my time management skills are on… you’re not likely to notice. Who notices a clock that works? But when my time management falters, it’s noticeable–like a stopped clock.

And if it’s not taken care of in a *ahem* timely manner, then it piles up and chaos… well, doesn’t so much reign, but certainly puts on a good show. Like a clock where the hands both just droop down to six and smoke is pouring out of the back.

The point is, a top bit of advice to all parents is to try and keep on top of things. To whit:

  • Empty that diaper pail before it gets to overflowing. Yes, we’re still at the point with young Jack where his diapers really aren’t that bad. But I’ve heard the stories. It’s only a matter of time before they become totally noxious and keeping ahead of the diaper pail is a good habit to be in earlier than later.
  • bottles-825x510Keep on top of bottle washing–baby bottles and breast milk bottles. You’d be surprised how quickly they can pile up and, hygiene aside, it’s good to have the bottles at the ready. I have a certain type of baby bottle that I favor when feeding Jack. If I don’t have my favored bottles clean and on hand for when I need them, then I’m stucking using my B-list bottles.
  • Laundry. Yeah. Well, this isn’t a new one. I’ve more or less been able to keep on top of laundry for two adults for a while with a modicum of success. Now add to that piles of baby clothes, blankets, swaddlers, sheets, etc. It’s not so much a new challenge as it is a larger challenge. Right now there is a load of wash in the dryer, and there are two more waiting. It’s 12:45 am. That is mostly because I waited a day later than I should have. My bad.

So new parents, keep on top of things. It’s easier for everyone when you do, and doesn’t take that much extra effort.

Oh, and don’t let those late blog entries pile up. Get behind on those and you’ll regret it.

Okay, I need to go clean out the lint trap.

Cheers!
