Dear Jackrabbit #17 — Milestones and your dad talks about food (again)

Dear Jackrabbit,

You’ve recently had your four-month health check and we’re happy to say that all boards are green. You’re still hitting every developmental mark like a champ, and you appear to be in picture perfect health. We couldn’t be happier or more thankful.

And you’ve also just recently hit another milestone. Last night you tried your first food that didn’t come from a nipple–plastic or otherwise. You took to spoonfuls of rice cereal as if you’d been doing it all your four-month life. Really, I mean you were grabbing the spoon and directing it toward your mouth and disappointed when there was no more. The mess was manageable.

In short, just like yer dad. (There’s a reason the dog always checks my spot after dinner and not your mother’s. She’s much neater than any of us, including you.)

Anyway, the sight of seeing you start on the path toward solid food made me think about food in general (not a hard thing to do actually, I’ll see a bird fly by and start thinking about teriyaki chicken).

Dad also does a pretty mean turkey.

I may have said this before, but I think I’m a little envious of how many new foods you’re going to get to experience for the first time–chicken tikka masala, beef loc lac, prime rib, New York sirloin, Norwegian goat cheese, yakisoba, meat pie, tacos, bratwurst, sourdough bread, pastrami (I mean, like, good pastrami), clam chowder (like the kind dad makes), hometown soupie, corn bread, pad thai, dad’s chicken marsala, dad’s shepherd’s pie, dad’s clam cakes, dad’s apple cobbler, dad’s chili, mom’s cookies, and so forth.

Lots of great stuff coming your way.

I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I was an awful picky eater when I was a kid. My parents were not great cooks, although my dad tried. (He eventually got pretty good at it, but it was after I had left home.) It really wasn’t until I started to learn to cook for myself that I discovered how awesome good food could be. We’ll see if we can’t get you started earlier. Who knows? Maybe you’ll discover some delicious tidbit before I do and you can teach me something!

Wouldn’t that be neat?

But in the meantime we’re going to watch you slorp down the rice cereal, then move on to other types of cereals, then vegetables and meats and fruits–all kind of goopy-styled–then actual solid foods like… like chicken wings and a good, sharp provolone!

Yeah!

Lots to look forward to.

Now I must sign off. I have a huge pan of shepherd’s pie to make because feeding others is as much fun as feeding oneself. You’ll see. Sure, I could probably tuck away a 20×12 pan of meat, corn, gravy, and mashed potatoes by myself, but food tastes better when it’s shared.

Love you, boy!

–Dad
