A Cat and Her Bo–well… A Cat and Her Boy’s Things To Sit On

If she fits, she sits!

I’ve written about the ever-evolving relationship between the dog and the boy, but have not yet written about the evolving relationship between the cat and the boy.

Ha ha ha.

Evolving.

Well, maybe I’m being unfair as there does seem to be something happening.

Unsurprisingly, any overtures made from one to the other are made by Jack to the cat. He has finally noticed Loki and has started to get curious. When Loki is nearby, Jack watches her as he does Max. If close enough, Jack will reach out and try to pet her.

Like Max, Loki is not particularly s interested, but while Max will at least show up at dinnertime, the cat…not so much.

That’s not to say that Loki doesn’t care about Jack. But it’s more that Loki appreciates all of the Jack-related stuff she can sit/sleep on. Such as:

  • Basinet
  • Pack ‘n play
  • Changing table upstairs
  • Changing table downstairs
  • Rocker
  • Swing
  • Play saucer
  • Play mat
  • Any pile of baby clothes thicker than one piece
  • All the blankets

So far, she has not taken over the high chair if for no other reason than we don’t leave it out when not in use, and she hasn’t gone into the crib yet.

Yet.

Will she let Jack pet her?

It is easier to catch Bigfoot on camera than to catch Loki allowing herself to be pet by Jack. So… here’s Bigfoot.

Sure, but only if she calculates that putting up with a petting (or just having her fur grabbed) is not as annoying from having to move from the comfortable or sunny spot she has settled down on. Once a certain level of personal space has been invaded, however, she will get up and move just…out…of…reach. Then she’ll sit there and look at the boy fruitlessly stretching and reaching out to her.

Cats, right?

And if I move Jack a little closer so he can touch her again, she dodges and sits just…out…of…reach.

And stares, unblinking, discompassionate, haughty.

You know, like a cat.

We don’t know Loki’s history with children. She’s a stray we took in who had obviously once had a home, but we don’t know if that home had children in it.

Maybe she knows

something we don’t.

Maybe she’s just being a cat.

In any case, I wish Jack the best of luck in befriending the cat. Unless they decide to go mousing together, or Jack brings her a dead bird, I think all of the relationship-building cards are in the cat’s paws.

Cheers!
